High Court Orders Manoj Jarange Patil to Undergo Treatment Amid Hunger Strike : Application of Saline is Mandatory, will the Hunger Strike End?

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has intervened in the ongoing hunger strike of Manoj Jarange Patil, who has been fasting since February 10 to demand immediate implementation of reservation for the Maratha community. The court has directed Jarange to undergo medical treatment, including the mandatory application of saline, as his condition has deteriorated significantly.

Gunaratna Sadavarte, who opposed Jarange's hunger strike in court, raised concerns about the validity of the claims made by Jarange's lawyer during the hearing. Sadavarte highlighted discrepancies in the lawyer's statements, questioning how information about Jarange's health could be obtained when he is not in a position to communicate directly.

During the proceedings, Jarange's lawyers faced scrutiny from the bench, which questioned their stance on his medical condition and the responsibility for his health. The court emphasized that while the right to protest is fundamental, it should not jeopardize public safety or lead to law and order issues.

In response to the court's directives, Jarange's lawyers expressed uncertainty about his willingness to undergo treatment, citing difficulties in communication with him. However, the court ruled that treatment should be administered by District Surgeon Jalna and Dr. Vinod Chawre, with the mandatory application of saline.

Jarange's hunger strike, which has entered its sixth day, has garnered significant attention, with concerns mounting over his health. The High Court's intervention aims to ensure his well-being while addressing the demands put forth by the Maratha community.
