Voting Facility Extended to Mumbai, Thane, and Pune Residents: Polling Stations Set Up Within Housing Societies

Mumbai:
In a significant departure from tradition, polling stations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections will be located within housing societies, marking a milestone in electoral infrastructure planning. Previously, polling stations were typically established in schools, Gram Panchayat offices, or other government buildings. However, this time, the Central Election Commission has introduced the concept of polling stations within housing societies in urban areas such as Pune, Mumbai, Thane, and the suburbs of Mumbai.

The decision to establish polling stations within housing societies is aimed at increasing voter turnout in urban areas, where voter participation has historically been lower compared to rural regions. With only around 50 percent voter turnout recorded in metros during Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha general elections, efforts are underway to incentivize urban voters to exercise their franchise. By setting up polling stations near residential areas, the Election Commission hopes to encourage more voters, particularly educated individuals who often view Election Day as a holiday.

Shrikant Deshpande, Maharashtra Chief Election Officer of the Central Election Commission, highlighted the rationale behind this initiative, stating, "There are large housing societies in cities like Pune, Mumbai, and Thane. Therefore, the Election Commission has made arrangements for voting within the premises of such large societies." The initiative includes the establishment of approximately 150 polling stations across the state, with 61 stations designated in Mumbai, 36 in Pune, 36 in Thane, and 17 in Mumbai suburbs. These polling stations will cater to members of societies with more than 1000 residents, providing them with convenient access to the voting process.

The move to set up polling stations within housing societies reflects the Election Commission's commitment to enhancing electoral accessibility and participation, ultimately strengthening the democratic fabric of the nation.
