RANCHI: In a decisive victory, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-
led coalition government, led by Chief Minister Champai Soren, secured a resounding 47-29 majority in the state assembly floor test on Monday. The win follows the recent turmoil, marked by the shooting incident involving the previous Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
During the voting, 77 out of the 81 MLAs were present in the assembly, with Independent legislator Saryu Roy abstaining and 29 legislators voting against the motion. The ruling alliance celebrated the success, labeling it a stern rebuke to the BJP's alleged attempts to destabilize the democratically elected government.
Chief Minister Champai Soren expressed his gratitude, stating, "Hemant hai to himmat hai" (if Hemant is there, strength is there), acknowledging the support from the former Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
The victory in the floor test marked the resilience of the ruling coalition despite recent political upheavals. Hemant Soren, who participated in the vote while in Enforcement Directorate custody, launched a scathing attack against the BJP, challenging them to prove corruption charges against him.
In his address, Hemant Soren alleged that his arrest was part of a conspiracy hatched by the Centre, and he accused the BJP of destabilizing opposition-ruled states. He pledged to come back stronger, asserting that the opposition's conspiracy would be thwarted.
Chief Minister Champai Soren emphasized the importance of democracy and condemned what he referred to as the misuse of investigative agencies. He announced that the cabinet expansion would take place in the next 2-3 days, and the government would focus on continuing the development initiatives started by Hemant Soren.
Congratulating the ruling coalition on winning the trust vote, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi remarked that the alliance had thwarted a BJP-RSS conspiracy and protected the government of the poor.
Despite the political turmoil, the constitutional functions of the state will continue, and the ruling coalition is determined to work towards making Jharkhand corruption-free and prosperous. The Jharkhand high court has adjourned the hearing on Hemant Soren's petition challenging his arrest until February 12, adding another layer of complexity to the state's political landscape.
