Kirby revealed that the US has been aware of Russia's pursuit of this capability for several months, if not years, with recent assessments providing higher confidence in understanding Russia's intentions. He emphasized ongoing diplomatic engagement with Russia, allies, and partners to address this issue.
Senator Mark Warner and Vice Chairman Marco Rubio affirmed their close monitoring of the situation and discussions with the administration regarding an appropriate response, urging caution to preserve vital sources and methods.
While the capability is not currently active or deployed, Kirby stressed the potential for disruption if such a capability were to be realized. The White House intends to engage directly with Russia and collaborate with allies and partners to address this critical issue and mitigate potential risks to Earth's services.
