Nagpur University Vice-Chancellor Suspended Amidst Controversy

Nagpur:
In a significant development, Dr. Subhash Chaudhary, the Vice-Chancellor of Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University, has been suspended by Governor Ramesh Bais, who also serves as the Chancellor. This action follows a report by the Baviskar Committee, indicating various irregularities during Dr. Chaudhary's tenure.

Dr. Chaudhary's suspension was confirmed through an official letter dispatched from the Governor's Office to the University's General Administration Department. The decision came after mounting concerns and controversies surrounding Dr. Chaudhary's management since he assumed office in August 2020.

The Baviskar Committee report highlighted several issues, including the selection of Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL) for examination work, alleged financial irregularities, and contracts awarded without proper procedures. Despite previous warnings from the state government against direct dealings with MKCL, Dr. Chaudhary purportedly proceeded with the contract, leading to widespread opposition.

The suspension announcement came amidst growing pressure from various quarters, including legislators like MLA Pravin Datke, who raised questions about the Baviskar Committee's recommendations and financial discrepancies. Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakantada Patil had also announced an inquiry into the matter.

Dr. Prashant Bokare, the Vice-Chancellor of Gondwana University, has been entrusted with the additional charge of Nagpur University's Vice-Chancellorship in the wake of Dr. Chaudhary's suspension.

While Dr. Chaudhary has the option to challenge his suspension in court, legal experts suggest limited possibilities due to existing state laws. The move to suspend Dr. Chaudhary marks a significant development in the ongoing saga surrounding the administration of Nagpur University, with implications for academic governance and accountability.
