Semiconductor Chip: India to Witness First 'Made in India' Chip by December 2024, Announces Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav

India is set to achieve a significant milestone in the field of electronics as Union Communications and Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has declared that the country will witness the launch of its first indigenous semiconductor chip by the end of this year. This announcement comes after the central government's approval on February 29 for the establishment of three semiconductor units in India.

"We will have the first Made in India chip by December 2024," stated Ashwini Vaishnav. "This endeavor has a long history, dating back to 1962. However, it couldn't materialize without the right policies and beliefs. Prime Minister Modi recognizes that for India to progress, electronics manufacturing is essential. From TVs to power electronics, semiconductors are indispensable."

Vaishnav further revealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's deep involvement in realizing semiconductor manufacturing in India. "We used to have discussions with PM Modi for about 45 minutes on semiconductor manufacturing, but he would give us nearly three hours, discussing each element meticulously," he added. Vaishnav emphasized that all departments were extensively involved in the process.

Speaking at the 'News 18 Rising India Summit' on March 19, Ashwini Vaishnav highlighted India's emergence as an electronics hub. He noted that telecom equipment worth approximately $100 crore (Rs 8293.84 crore) is exported from India.

The significance of semiconductor chips cannot be overstated, as they are integral to various electronic products, including smartphones, gaming consoles, medical devices, and vehicles. The recent global shortage of semiconductor chips significantly impacted the automotive sector, leading to delays in fulfilling vehicle orders. With India's foray into semiconductor manufacturing, the nation aims to strengthen its position in the global electronics market.
